The South Dakota module, written for the SD bar.

South Dakota runs the SD Bar Examination — a two-day, twice-a-year exam administered in February and July by the South Dakota Board of Bar Examiners. The Barstudyprep South Dakota module is a $499 one-time pass to the SD essay outline, the SD-contextualized MBE bank, the MPT-equivalent workspace, and the South Dakota study-guide library — all anchored to SDCL § X-Y, SD Const. art., SD R. Civ. P., SD R. Crim. P., SD R. Evid., and the South Dakota Standards of Professional Responsibility (SDSRP).

SD jurisdiction framing

A civil-code-friendly framing of the SD exam.

South Dakota is a common-law jurisdiction whose statutes follow the civil-code-friendly style. The SD exam reads from a statute-and-codebook primary-authority stack: SDCL § X-Y citations, SD Const. articles, SD R. Civ. P. + SD R. Crim. P. sections, SD R. Evid. (citing the South Dakota-adopted FRE number), and SDSRP. The module frames the South Dakota exam the same way: source-first via SDCL §, then rule, then independent-state-constitutional overlay (SD Const. art. VI § 13) where applicable.

Three-part SD overview

What the SD Bar Examination actually asks.

The SD Bar Examination is a two-day exam administered twice yearly. Day 1 carries the SD essay component (60-minute essays, mixed-topic format) plus an MPT-equivalent scoring component. Day 2 carries the 200-question multistate MBE. The three cards below open the matching follow-on page in the module.

SD Board of Bar Examiners · administration

How the South Dakota Bar Examination is administered — and what every candidate has to clear.

The four administrative facts every South Dakota candidate should know before sitting. Sourced to the South Dakota Board of Bar Examiners under the South Dakota Court Rules and the South Dakota Standards of Professional Responsibility (SDSRP). This is the statutory ground the module is written on top of, not a sales pitch.

01 · administrator

South Dakota Board of Bar Examiners

Bar admission is administered by the South Dakota Board of Bar Examiners acting under the authority of the South Dakota Supreme Court and the South Dakota Court Rules. The Board processes applications, sets the exam, and certifies admissions.

02 · eligibility

JD from an ABA-approved law school

A JD from an ABA-approved law school is the default eligibility path under the South Dakota Court Rules. The Board also accepts the foreign-trained LLM alternative for applicants who complete an approved LLM program from an ABA-approved U.S. law school.

03 · the bar exam

Two-day SD exam, Feb & July · essay component + MPT-equivalent + 200 MBE

Day 1 AM: the South Dakota essay component (60-minute essays on the Board-published topic pool). Day 1 PM: an MPT-equivalent scoring component (60 minutes). Day 2 AM: 200-question multistate MBE (6 hours, two 3-hour sessions). The SD components blend with the MBE for a pass/no-pass determination.

04 · MPRE + SDSRP + post-admission CLE

MPRE scaled ≥ 85 + SDSRP + post-admission CLE

The MPRE scaled ≥ 85 is required within the eligibility window. The South Dakota Standards of Professional Responsibility (SDSRP) govern ethical practice post-admission. Post-admission CLE is the published South Dakota State Bar annual cycle, with the jurisdiction-specific professional-responsibility requirement.
