Louisiana candidates write three essays on exam day that are sourced from the Civil Code and the Code of Civil Procedure — not from common-law judges. The outline below names the topics that recur, the Civil Code articles behind each, and the triage every grader is reading for when the prompt looks familiar but ships a civilian twist.

Code-rooted topics

Obligations, property, and successions.
The recurring essay topics are sourced directly from the Civil Code. Obligations questions test causa, conventional obligations, solidary liability, and the division between contractual and delictual fault. Property questions turn on ownership vs possession, predial servitudes, and the distinct rules for accession and boundary. Successions questions test the forced-heirship regime, the legitime, and the order of collation — vocabulary with no multistate equivalent.

Civilian triage

Civil-law vs common-law triage.
The grader reads for civilian methodology before reading the rule: identify the source (Civil Code, Code of Civil Procedure, jurisprudence) before stating the rule. A common-law analog — consideration, joint-and-several liability, Rule against perpetuities — is almost always the wrong answer. The triage framework names the most common multistate-vs-civilian traps: causa vs consideration, solidary vs joint-and-several, predial servitudes vs easements by implication, and the legitime vs the discretionary trust.

Study strategy · 3-month cycle

A 3-month LA bar plan, written for working and repeat candidates.

If you have 30–40 hours per week — full-time work, evening hours, weekends — this is the cycle the Barstudyprep Louisiana module is built around. If you are repeating the bar, the reg is what failed last time: Phase 1 is reg, Phase 2 is volume, Phase 3 is calibration, Phase 4 is the sprint. The cycle assumes a working schedule and an uneven week; recovery rules for a missed day are part of the design, not an apology.

Phase 1–2 · foundations + drilling

Weeks 1–6. Reg, then volume.
Phase 1 (weeks 1–3) is a closed-book read through the Civil Code for the exam topics — obligations, property, successions, sales, and the Code of Civil Procedure framing. Phase 2 (weeks 4–6) is volume: timed essay drills on the IRAC scaffold, one essay per weekday, plus an MBE set on the weekends. The uneven-day rule: if a weekday is lost to work, do not double up the next day — shift the missed essay to Saturday and protect the recovery day.

Phase 3–4 · calibration + sprint

Weeks 7–12. Calibration, then the sprint.
Phase 3 (weeks 7–10) is calibration: full-length practice essays under timer, scored against the civilian triage rubric, with a focused re-read of the Civil Code articles drilled wrong. Phase 4 (weeks 11–12) is the sprint — MPT reps, a final-week review of the legitime and solidary liability rules, and a hard weekday-of-the-exam plan. Uneven-day recovery in this phase is a half-day only; protecting the final week is non-negotiable.

Why is Louisiana different from California?

Louisiana is the only civil-law U.S. jurisdiction. The bar exam sources its private-law questions from the Civil Code and the Code of Civil Procedure rather than from common-law judges. The essays grade Civil Code article cites and Louisiana vocabulary — "solidary liability," "causa," "predial servitude" — not the multistate equivalents.

Does the MBE bank reflect LA-specific overlays?

Yes. Every MBE question in the LA bank is anchored in the multistate rules; where the Louisiana Civil Code or Code of Civil Procedure diverts, the rationale includes an LA overlay explaining the divergence. Candidates can drill the multistate baseline, then return for LA-specific pass once a question is missed.

Is the MPT template graded by an AI?

No. The MPT template page is a workspace — it shows the task-model skeleton, time budget, and a small library of past prompts with sample solution scaffold. Candidates compare their draft against the scaffold, not against an AI grade.
